I suspect this interface was created by Applied Minds, because Danny Hillis demo'd a similar interface for FedEx at the Radical Craft, conference in 2006.

This video shows flights in & out of the FedEx hub in Memphis, Tennessee. You can see that most planes head into Memphis at the end of the day, and out again in the early morning. Data visualization is one of the most interesting frontiers in interactive design at the moment. A smart interface like this requires 3 things: A good client (FedEx). The right solution (tiny airplanes flying over a US map in condensed time). And the right execution. This wasn't a hard problem to solve technically, but if the interface wasn't right, it would have failed.
